Today, when people talk about salt therapy, many see it as a modern way to support breathing, immunity, or overall regeneration. What many don’t realize is that the idea itself did not begin in wellness centers or modern clinics. Its roots go much deeper, into an environment that was anything but comfortable, salt mines.
It was there that doctors in the 19th century began noticing something unusual. While working in regular mines was often associated with respiratory problems and chronic coughing, miners working in salt mines seemed to have healthier airways and fewer breathing-related issues.
One of the first to systematically observe this phenomenon was Polish physician Feliks Boczkowski. In the famous Wieliczka Salt Mine, he observed that local miners suffered from respiratory illnesses less often than workers in other types of mines. This raised a question that remains relevant today: can a salt-rich environment directly influence respiratory health?

What makes a salt environment unique?
Salt mines have a very specific microclimate. The air is stable, clean, naturally humid, and contains fine salt particles suspended in the air. This aerosol is considered one of the main reasons why spending time in such an environment may be beneficial.
When inhaled, these microscopic salt particles enter the respiratory tract, where they may support its natural function. This is not treatment in the traditional sense. Rather, it is about creating an environment where the body can better cleanse itself, regenerate, and respond to external stressors.
This is also why salt therapy has gained attention among people dealing with recurring colds, allergies, asthma, or long-term mucus congestion.
The benefits go beyond breathing
Historically, most of the attention focused on the respiratory system. Over time, however, it became clear that spending time in a salt-rich environment may have broader effects.
Cleaner air with fewer everyday urban allergens, a calm setting, and intentional slowing down may also support the natural regeneration of the skin and help calm the nervous system.
How did modern halotherapy develop?
Observations from salt mines gradually led to the development of speleotherapy, the therapeutic use of natural cave environments. Later, halotherapy emerged as a way to recreate these conditions in a more accessible setting.
The principle is simple. In a salt room, a halogenerator produces dry salt aerosol, creating a salt-rich microclimate similar to the one found in salt mines. This allows people to experience the benefits of a salt environment without traveling underground.
This is what made this form of support accessible to a much wider group of people.
